English Immersion

Our small communities typically have a English speaking rate in excess of 95% which guarantees a profoundly rich, English immersion experience.  Many of our current international students have transferred to our program specifically for this reason.

The limited size of our program ensures that international students will participate in academic and extra-curricular activities alongside Canadian student thus guaranteeing a uniquely authentic Canadian experience.

In addition to these regular immersion experiences, each of our international students is offered an outstanding ESL program, either to support their regular classes or as an independent intensive language class.

Our Communities

Nechako Lakes School District is comprised of four distinct rural communities that offer a variety of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.  Our beautiful area of British Columbia offers hundreds of lakes, rivers, forests and mountains that lend themselves to a variety of recreational opportunities.

Unlike choosing an urban educational experience where English immersion is not necessarily guaranteed, our region offers northern BC opportunities and an excellent English immersion experience.

Our Host Families

We are aware that the most critical part of a student’s study abroad experience is their life in their new Canadian home.  We know that a happy student will be a successful student and so we strive to recruit quality homestay families.

The majority of our homestay families have children that attend our schools but we occasionally have homestay families that we have worked with for years who no longer have children in school.  The choice of a homestay family is different for all of our students and so we strive to be able to offer choice whenever we can.

Students are placed with a family that is the best possible match that will hopefully meet the needs of the student.  Wherever possible we attempt to have our homestay families connect with their guest prior to arrival in British Columbia.  Our families are active, enjoy healthy lifestyles and take pleasure in having their students participate in family activities.

Homestay Opportunities

We are always looking for potential full time and part time homestay families in all four SD 91 communities.  If you would like more information on becoming a homestay family, please contact Mr. Manu Madhok at the School Board Office in Vanderhoof.

Homestay families are provided with a SD 91 HOMESTAY HANDBOOK that helps to answer a variety of questions related to being a homestay family

Our ESL Program

We offer a very individualized ESL program that utilizes the expertise of ESL teachers, ESL support staff and ESL computer aided software to ensure that our international students are being provided with the adequate English language instruction and practice to produce good oral and written English.
